Creating a Loyalty Program for Your Custom Auto or Motorcycle Shop

Loyalty programs are everywhere. I’m willing to bet you have several loyalty cards in your wallet. You may even have loyalty memberships you’ve forgotten about. Customers love them – and with good reason. There are so many benefits to using rewards/loyalty programs. Convenience stores have really jumped on the Loyalty Concept and customers earn free fuel and any items in store by using them.

Most custom auto or motorcycle shops sell parts, accessories, clothing and brand related items. A Loyalty Program can easily be created based on a customer’s purchases and help them to earn free or discounted items.

A well-thought-out loyalty program provides benefits to customers that can range from reduced prices for products – to giveaways for exclusive access to special events and offers. For your custom shop, they help with customer retention by incentivizing loyalty.

The trick, of course, is creating a loyalty program that does both. Give the customer a financial benefit and also keep the customer base that you have.  There are lots of different options, including referral programs.

So, with that in mind, let’s talk about loyalty programs. Should you create one? What benefits and features are best for your customers and you? Here’s what you need to know.

The Benefits of a Loyalty Program

Let’s start by talking about the benefits you’ll reap if you start a loyalty program that appeals to your customers. There are several that
make loyalty programs a must for any custom shop owner: 

1.  They can help you retain customers. One study found that a 5% increase in customer retention led to an average of a 25% increase in profits.

     2.  60% of loyal customers say they buy more frequently and make more purchases from the Custom shop brands that they love.

     3. Surprisingly, loyalty programs don’t cost companies as much as you might think. It costs far more to acquire a new customer than to keep an existing one. When you offset the cost of a loyalty program against the cost to attract new customers, it’s still a far less expensive option.

     4. Customers who participate in loyalty programs feel valued and that triggers a cognitive bias known as Reciprocity. That’s the instinct that makes us feel that we should return a favor when someone does something for us.

    5. Research shows that loyalty programs increase sales. According to one study, members of loyalty programs generated between 12% and 18% more revenue for businesses than non-members.

    6.  Loyalty programs can help you learn about your customers. It may take a bit of trial and error but creating a loyalty program allows you to collect valuable data about your customers and their buying habits. You can use what you learn to fine-tune your loyalty program and to create offers that will appeal to your most loyal customers.

Loyalty programs offer benefits to you as a custom auto or motorcycle shop owner, while also giving your most loyal customers a reason to return to your business, increase their purchasing, and recommend your business
to their friends and social media followers.

Features of a Successful Loyalty Program

What features should your loyalty program have? There’s no one correct answer, but there are some things that most successful loyalty programs offer. Here are the ones that you should seriously think about working
into your program:

n  A structure that incentivizes customers to purchase frequently and spend more money than they normally would. A great example is Harley Davidson’s Rider Rewards.  Loyalty members earn one point for each dollar they spend, and the points are transferred to a coupon for members to use for discounts at Harley Davidson.

n Early access to special offers and products. A lot of loyalty programs offer members insider status where they get first access to new offers and a heads-up on the release of new products. It’s a good way to make your loyalty program members feel valued and special.

n  Ease of use. Providing a frictionless experience is a must if you want members to participate in your program. It shouldn’t be difficult to join, and you should make it simple to accrue rewards and use them.

n  Personalization. It’s a great idea to create a mailing list for your loyalty members and personalize what you send to them.

n  Freebies. Customers must accumulate points to earn rewards, but there’s nothing wrong with offering them something just for joining your program. You could send them a small, branded item each year on their birthday, like a drink koozie with your shop’s name on it. It’s a nice reminder that they care about their customers – and who doesn’t like a birthday present?

n  Brand relevance. Finally, your program should be relevant to your brand and deliver what your customers want. “The key here is to think about your business, brand values, and customers and create a loyalty program that delivers on your customers’ expectations while helping your bottom line.”

Ideas for Loyalty Programs

Here are some suggestions for how to structure your loyalty
program in a way that makes customers want to participate.

n  Use a simple point-based system. I’ve seen some loyalty programs that are convoluted. Here again, Harley Davidson’s “one point for each dollar spent” is a role model. Nobody’s getting confused about how their system works.

n  Charge a fee for access. This option might seem counterintuitive but it’s often quite effective. You can charge a fee for lifetime access and pay dividends to customers based on how much they spend during the year.

n  Gamify your loyalty program. Everybody loves a game and there are lots of ways to make loyalty fun for your customers. Your loyalty customers can earn rewards including prizes and cash rewards.

n  Create a tiered system to further reward big spenders. It makes sense to give your most loyal customers – the ones who buy the most from you – additional rewards. Creating different reward levels (Gold, Silver and Bronze, for example) will incentivize people to buy more to earn the
extra rewards you’re offering.

Once you get your loyalty program going, track the results and use what you learn to fine-tune your structure and rewards. Your customers will let you know if something’s working – and your bottom line will reflect their increased loyalty.

At Custom Shops Marketing, we are always excited when we get to build new websites for our clients! A couple of months ago Rio Grande Shovelheads in El Paso, TX reached out for a new website build and re-branding of their identity. They were in the process of changing the name of their motorcycle shop to RGS Performance Motorcycles and decided on a whole new look, a new logo and new website.

From the get-go, the owner of RGS Performance Motorcycles, Joe Castillo, was a great guy to work with! He already had ideas of what he wanted for a new logo and had a good idea of what he wanted for the website. It can be a lot of work collaborating on the information and photos that we needed, but Joe always made the time! We give Joe an A + for being such an awesome client to work with!

In the process of building this website, we also got to see what a class act this performance shop is! They are extremely popular in the El Paso area for their professionalism and their mad skills with all things motorcycle! They also host a show in September each year called the 4:44 Motorcycle Show. There is quite a story behind how that show got named, but in all fairness, you would have to ask Joe, because it is his story to tell! 😊

Why Every Custom Shop Needs Digital Marketing

Every Custom Shop needs digital marketing. It isn’t optional.

The fact remains, though, that 84% of businesses have a content marketing strategy as of early 2021. 16% don’t.

If you’re one of the people who has put off digital marketing or done it haphazardly, it’s time to get serious about it. You may have claimed your Google My Business listing – and that counts as digital marketing. It’s also the bare minimum you can do.

So, with that in mind, let’s talk about why every Custom Auto and Motorcycle Shop – including yours – needs digital marketing, and which marketing strategies we recommend.

What is Digital Marketing?

Some custom shop owners don’t understand what digital marketing is and that’s part of the problem, so, let’s start with a definition.

Digital marketing is the sum of any efforts you make to promote your business online. It may include:

 Email marketing
 Blogging
 Search engine advertising (PPC)
 Social media posting
 Social media advertising
 Business listings
 Video marketing

The key to making the most of digital marketing is choosing the strategies that are most likely to deliver the results you want.

Target Local Keywords

The first thing you need to recognize is that in the world of digital marketing, everything is local. If you try to compete for the same keywords used by big corporations with huge marketing budgets, you’re going to lose. You’ll get far more bang for your buck if you think local.

Local keywords should be a combination of industry-specific words that identify what your particular custom shop does and local words that let people know where you are. For example, a custom automobile paint shop in Atlanta, Georgia might target words such as:

 Atlanta Custom Auto Paint
 Custom Automotive Paint in Atlanta
 Top Rated Custom Automotive Shop in Atlanta

You get the idea. You want the words you target to be specific to both your business and your location. Google prioritizes local search already and optimizing your website and ads for local keywords will give you the best possible chance of connecting with people in your area.

Claim Your Local Listings

A big part of digital marketing is creating a consistent online presence. A person who finds you on Yelp should have access to the same basic information about your business as someone who searches for you on Google or someone who navigates directly to your website thanks to a referral from a friend.

Local listings such as Google My Business, Yelp, Angie’s List, and others act as online directories. They’re there to help people find the businesses they need. If you haven’t already done so, you should claim every listing for your business. Once you’ve done that, it’s time to update and standardize all information to create a seamless presence.

Use Social Media Wisely

Social media should be part of your digital marketing strategy. As of 2020, 3.8 billion people worldwide use social media. Your customers use social media.
The trick, of course, is to know which social media options your customers prefer.

B2B companies should focus on LinkedIn. Any company with a visual or aspirational product would do well to invest in Instagram and Pinterest marketing. Most small businesses can benefit from having a Facebook presence.

Once you’ve decided which social media accounts to create, you still need to use them wisely. That means using both organic posts and advertising to connect with your target audience. Custom Shops can focus on local customers by using carefully-chosen hashtags and participating in community events.

Don’t Forget Email Marketing

Email marketing isn’t the new kid on the block, but it is still one of the most cost-effective digital marketing strategies around. It’s particularly effective for keeping existing customers engaged and coming back to your business.

If you don’t already have an email list, you can build one by creating content to give away and advertising it on Google or social media. If people want to download the content, they’ll need to provide you with their email address.
You can get the most from your email marketing by creating unique content for the people on your list and combining it with special coupons and giveaways.

Advertise on YouTube

YouTube advertising is something that a lot of local businesses miss out on because they don’t understand how effective it is. Fully 90% of consumers say they have learned about a new product from seeing an ad on YouTube.

Marketers agree that pre-roll skippable ads are the most effective format for YouTube ads. However – and this is anecdotal – we’ve noticed an increase in the number of short, non-skippable pre-roll ads we’re seeing. Consumers are less likely to mind sitting through a 15-second ad they can’t skip than an ad that’s longer and not skippable.

YouTube is owned by Google and that’s one reason that YouTube is a great option for retargeting customers who have visited your site without buying anything.

Encourage Reviews

You already know that reviews are important. You should consider them an essential part of your digital marketing strategy for your custom shop.
If you’re not already doing so, start encouraging customers to write online reviews. You can ask them in person if you have a brick-and-mortar store or, if you have an email list or Facebook account, ask them to leave a review and link to your preferred review site.

Optimize for Mobile

It’s safe to say that in 2021, all digital marketing is mobile marketing. We don’t mean that nobody accesses a website or social media on a computer but it’s a fact that mobile search has surpassed desktop search and almost everybody has a smartphone.

In practical terms, that means you have to be sure that your website is optimized for mobile. Ideally, you should have:

 A mobile responsive design that looks equally good on any device
 Mobile-friendly content
 Clickable buttons

No mobile user should need to zoom in to hit your call-to-action button or scroll horizontally to read your blog posts. There’s no excuse for ignoring mobile users – so don’t do it.
